The demo hides the hard parts
A demo usually has a clean question, a cooperative caller, and a carefully prepared answer. Real callers interrupt, change their minds, provide partial information, and ask for something outside the system's authority.
Start with a bounded job
Bookings, status checks, opening-hours questions, and first-line triage are easier to make reliable than a general-purpose receptionist. Define what the agent can do, what it can see, and exactly when it must hand over.
The human handoff is not a failure
A useful voice agent recognises uncertainty, preserves the conversation context, and gets the customer to the right person without making them start again. The handoff path should be designed and tested as carefully as the automated path.
Measure trust as well as containment
Track successful resolutions, transfers, repeat calls, abandoned calls, and complaints. A high automation rate is not a win if customers have to work harder or staff spend their time repairing the interaction.
